Comedy Comparison

Note 9/10: More on this here, on IFC.com

Thoughts in process (running squirrels)…

At the Edinburgh Fringe Fest, each year comedians write an entirely new show. That show must be coherent, pointed, and funny. It is critiqued by reviewers and a discerning audience.

In the US, many comics find their funny, and just ride it, without ever being nudged to do more, different, or better, and without ever being critically compared within the comedy genre. There are plenty of exceptions, and the best comics are doing great, evolving work… but in the middle, or the upper-middle, there seems to be a flatness that is forced away in the UK.
Or do I have a distorted view of things?
What say you?

Controversy is a form of publicity, right?

Well, now. Guess I touched a nerve.

“Bill Hicks Award Winner” jokes about assassinating Obama

Methinks not everyone gets ‘comedy,’ though some of the commentators understand.

May 5, 2008

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin is a thief!

Well, maybe.
He did say “Great stuff! Very funny! I wrote some of that down to use” after my performance Friday night at the Val Air Ballroom in Des Moines, Iowa (site of the infamous 2004 “Dean Scream,” fyi).
He’s a good man, that Senator, and well-loved.
If, however, any of you flip on C-Span and see him pantomiming Fox News as a Nazi Weather Broadcast… let me know. The Reverend Wright drama will be nothing compared to a comic scorned.

More soon. Heavy travel over for a spell…

Check it. Some political stuff; yes, that is the music the club plays; and sure, a little swearing, but c’mon, it’s late Saturday night in Glasgow… you think people are sober?

Send it around, if that’s your thing.

March 26, 2008

Thank You Glasgow Int’l Comedy Fest!

Edinburgh Fringe venues set!

For those who like to plan 6 months in advance, we’ve gotten our venues for the Edinburgh Fringe Fest in August 2008.
I’ll be doing my solo show at The Stand at 6:10pm every night.
We’ll be doing our new, mutli-media, variety show, The Americans, at the Gilded Balloon every afternoon at 3pm.
These are two of the best venues at the Fringe and these are great time slots. We’re very excited, we want you and yours to attend, repeatedly, and we’re ready to rock. Much more to come…
Hoo. Ray.
